The Big Idea
Before we were told what divided us, we belonged.
People have always gathered to make sense of being alive. Around a fire. Over food. While working the land or walking somewhere together. Probably while laughing about something completely inappropriate.
We told stories. Compared experiences. Passed along what we knew. Argued about what we didn't. Looked at the stars and wondered what was actually going on up there.
Thousands of years later, we have more information than ever and somehow we're still asking some very old questions.
How much do we actually know about our own bodies?
What is consciousness, and what can the natural world teach us?
And what might we discover if we stay curious about all of it?

A place for the conversation that never really ended.
We're still doing it!
One week we might be talking with a consciousness researcher about what happens near death. The next, we're outside learning which plants growing around us are actually edible. We might travel somewhere together to help restore a piece of land. Somewhere in between there might be music, a ridiculous conversation around a fire, a trip somewhere none of us has been, or a question that sends us down a rabbit hole for three months. We don't need every conversation to end with an answer.
Sometimes a better question is enough.

This Is Home
What if home isn't somewhere else?
There is an enormous planet we barely know. People we haven't met. Food we haven't tasted. Things we haven't made yet. Questions science is still trying to answer. Old knowledge worth listening to carefully. Music that changes the atmosphere in a room. Places where you can look up and actually see the Milky Way.
There is still so much to experience.
I started Cosmic Native because I wanted to explore more of it, with people who are interested too.
I've heard some version of “I just want to go home” from a surprising number of people. I understand that feeling. Illness, loss and experiences I couldn't explain sent me looking for answers in a lot of places.
Eventually the question changed.
Instead of wondering how to get somewhere else, I became much more interested in what it would mean to actually be here.
In this body, on this planet.
During this peculiar little stretch of history.
There is a practical side to that question. Can we feed ourselves? Care for our bodies? Grow things? Know the land around us? Build relationships that can hold some weight? AND HAVE SO MUCH FUN DOING IT ALL?!
And there are the bigger questions. Consciousness. Death. Meaning. Intuition. The questions humans have been asking for a very long time.
We don't have to choose between the two. We want to know how to grow tomatoes and talk about consciousness.
Preferably with interesting people and something good to eat with a belly full of laughter.
